Safe from Smog and Smoke: Keeping the Air Healthy in your Home
Unfortunately continuous erv poses significant humidity increase in summer in many climates.
Great overview! Thank you!
The tape is warrantied for thirty years, the tape and the way it’s installed is not warranted. When it comes lose it will be the installers fault no matter how much time they spent getting it right.
Why did the ventilation fan in my house suddenly stop? I set the timer for an hour, but it only worked for a few minutes and then suddenly stopped. I tried it many times and it was the same every time. What is the reason?😢
Hard to say from here, I'd suggest reaching out to the manufacturer or have a local HVAC specialist take a look. Hope you get it sorted out!
I see you're filling a different kind of hole these days.
😂
Very informative
If you install xps foam on the exterior with fibreglass batt insulation is a Vapor barrier still recommend, I’m in Ontario not too far from you.
I’m 22 yrs old and want to get into the trade and one day be a contractor and own my own business, What type of jobs would you recommend best for overall knowledge to be a contractor in the future. Would it be carpentry?
Best advice if you are a new general contractor Start off extremely small Then scale slowly
My Hrv is running on high speed 24/7 what could be the reason? Can i unplug it in summer?
Use Web floor trusses and channel HvAC and plumbing through these. And keep your open floor plan manageable such as 26x50 feet. Then small bump out rooms such as 13x14’.
I watched this because it was 'Hemp Install', this was more about other things and much less about install, I'm a bit bummed. Label your videos more carefully, people won't trust your stuff when mislabeled. I'm glad you are supporting this material!
Thanks for watching and for the feedback! We try to educate as well as demonstrate, and did cover the differences we experienced from a fibreglass install after 2:50 :) Was there specific information you were looking for and didn't find?
Hi Casey, just a for fun question, if you could choose to build homes anywhere in North America where would you go? I know Tarion can be difficult in Ontario but I love our province and geography. Where else would you love to be able to build homes?
Ok bro, 3:23, how on earth is the MOISTURE going to transfer from incoming air to out going air? The moisture is going to magically transfer through the solid walls of the ERV?
Question: we have 2k sqft of radiant water heating, but run with propane. Very expensive. We are thinking to use a heat pump. Thoughts on switching propane for a heat pump?
Great channel. This is awesome and I'm watching all the videos now. Is there a password on the estimating spreadsheet?
Thanks for watching, glad you're finding it useful! You can watch the video and get the spreadsheet here: app.convertkit.com/landing_pages/121274?v=7
But it’s a sales video talking about how great you are….
As someone that lives in the Midwest, I'll take a smelly, damp basement over facing a tornado without one.
Fair point! With the right products installed well, it doesn't necessarily need to be smelly and damp either! Unfortunately too many aren't finished well. Thanks for watching
Hi guys absolutely love your channel just subscribed and turned on the notification bell. My name is Abdullah I am 20 years old and I currently live in Toronto Canada. I really love the construction industry and see how much potential there is, my longterm goal is to own my own business that can possibly function with out me. My plan is to first work for a successful home remodeling company to get a good understanding of the different trades, then go for my GC license. My next goal is to work as a project manager and part time in sales to learn as much as I can on the business end. I strongly believe that this will provide with a good understanding and the skills needed to start my own construction business. At the the end of the day I am still a 20 year old and this goal may sound delusional so I hope you may guide me and give me advice on what you think the most ideal and efficient path to take on becoming a construction business owner. I would also like to know if you see value in the formal schooling route (4 year bachelors in construction management) or simply working my way to my goal. I thank you once again for your help and wish your channel the best of success!!!!
Hi Abdullah, thanks for watching and best of luck with your business, you're asking questions and love construction so you're on the right track and don't sound delusional at all. Your plan sounds great! There is value in schooling and hands-on experience, in fact we have a mix of people on our crew who learned everything hands-on and some who did school first. You may or may not need the degree but it will always be valuable to get the hands-on experience. You'll have to find the right combination for you of schooling, definitely recommend focusing on learning building science while spending as much time as you can in the field. While you're at it, check out the free course on theconsciousbuilderacademy.com and these videos: ruclips.net/video/gGGRcGh-yoU/видео.html, ruclips.net/video/1Gl4jf_MIVc/видео.html. to help you on your way!
Fake dormers… 😂 wow man… then just atleast make that space accessible. Thats just such a waste.
We work with our clients and the designs they bring us to give them the healthiest, most comfortable and efficient version of what they want. Making that space accessible changes envelope details and requires more energy to heat and cool the space too. At the end of the day it's their money and they ended up with a beautiful home!
@@Theconsciousbuilder fair enough, there is no accounting for taste, And I respect you for the reply.
I'm in Ottawa too and in the market for an ERV. Who would you recommend?
Exterior is better. Can always plant new landscaping
We leave the shims short at the exterior and make sure our foam goes out and around the shim so the barrier is continuous.
Trash
How often do people have solae with standby generators?
Yup and you can hit the nail heads with LAF (LIquid applied flashing). Bob in Nevada
Do you have a construction company that builds in Quebec?
Currently we're just operating across the boarder in the Ottawa area but for the right project we might work in Quebec. More paperwork :)
Thank you for sharing your estimating spreadsheet! Can you share the quote tracker template?
With a water tube based system is there still electricity throughout along with tubes or is it just tubes? Would prefer not to have electricity running everywhere
The tubes return to the boiler. Only electric is in the boiler itself. Water and glycol mix so it doesn't freeze and burst.
@@TheGuyOutdoors1 thank you
My dumbass home builder installed an ERV but never plugged it in and configured it. It's been non op for almost 2 years now.
If the carbon portion is ignored, how does closed cell spray foam compare to Rockwool?
What are some of the entry level jobs that a GC could start doing? Garages, additions?
Sounds like another, as good as product. 40 years roofing seen a lot of products come and go through the years.
I thought this was going to list the steps of getting your GC license 😞
Hey! This is more about the successful element so it's relevant, but if you're starting right from scratch you should check out this video we did quite awhile back, which probably has more of what you're looking for: ruclips.net/video/gGGRcGh-yoU/видео.html. Another helpful resource is our academy, and definitely check out the free course there "TOP 5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW: when starting a construction business" www.consciousbuilderacademy.com/course/top-5-things-starting-construction-business Best of luck in your career journey!
@@Theconsciousbuilder okay, thanks for sharing!
Do you have any suggestions on what to do if I already rented a house with sliding glass door?
most people that use this system will go back over the nail holes with the zip liquid flash. If you don’t like the tape then you can use the liquid flash instead of the tape too.
Doesn't sharing the load between solar, LP, or natural gas offset the initial cost of heated flooring & nose bleeding cost of a full capacity solar system? Sure, I know that it's supposed to pay for itself, but does it really, with replacing batteries, solar pannels & the other electrical accessories? I'm really interested, because I am going to making that decision myself soon. Thanks
During the summer, I would think that well-insulated windows would preclude colder temperatures in the home from penetrating the insulated glass such that water condenses on the cooled exterior pane. If more than half (but not all) of my windows get foggy during the summer, is it time to replace those windows? Overhangs, foliage, etc., are not a differentiating factor.
Thanks for this helpful video. I’m in the UK and looking at buying a house which has ground floor underfloor heating, wet system linked to gas boiler. Radiators upstairs. I’m worried about how much it might cost to run the underfloor heating compared to gas central heating. Due to energy costs here, I try to keep my current heating off unless I really need to have it on when it is very cold. Any advice welcome. Thank you.
Curious if your list is any different now! Any new ones you'd add? I have been really like JobTread.
An interesting project! It's always helpful to hear about a homeowner's experiences living in the completed project. A few thoughts: first, in my opinion, this home is far, far too big. Why? Does it house fifteen or twenty people? We call it housing obesity around here. Yes, substantial roof overhangs are vital on ALL homes in most climates and I think it's ridiculous that most building designers have forgotten this. Finally, that wall assembly is certainly high performance but complicated and therefore expensive. My wife and I designed and built our own off-grid super-insulated home some dozen years ago. Eleven hundred square feet, one level, clad with Hardipanel and steel roofing with three and a half foot overhangs. The walls are double-stud assemblies twelve inches thick, insulated with blown-in cellulose (R-48). The windows are medium-quality triple-glazed vinyl units from All Weather Windows in Edmonton. Double Roxul batts are underfoot (R-36), and loose-blow cellulose overhead gave us R-68. Total material costs were $55,000 which equals $50/ square foot. Of course, that was before post-pandemic price gouging, so you could almost double those costs today. We have ground gutters that collect water off the roof and store it in a 3200L underground tank; it's used solely for toilet flushing. We have three evacuated-tube collectors (Chinese and therefore very cost-effective) on the roof for water heating, combined with a coil in the wood cookstove. A PV setup in an outbuilding supplies power. Overall, we're very happy with this home, which was cutting edge at the time. There are a few things we'd do differently. The price of photovoltaics has fallen dramatically; $3.15/watt when we built, $0.50/watt now. Today I would install a much larger solar array so we could also heat water. Solar hot water is somewhat complicated and harder to control. I'd look seriously at a ground-source heat pump to supply hot water to underfloor heating. And of course we could easily make those wall thicker for more R-value. As it is, we use 1/5 to 1/4 the wood to heat our home, compared to similar homes in the area.
Name of the door ?
Can you please elaborate on the booster switch option? Are those systems known by another name? You indicated that the purpose is to balance inside air needs with compensating air-intake.
The booster switch should be installed in every house that has an ERV or HRV. Typically they are installed in the bathrooms and will have a timer that runs for 20 minutes, 40 minutes or 60 minutes. Yes, you'll want to make sure the system is balanced properly. Ideally you have the same amount of air coming into the house as is leaving the house. Your HVAC contractor should be able to do this and the HVAC design should have the required CFM for each room.
@@Theconsciousbuilder Thank you. But the booster switch itself - is it a "switch" or is a damper with a fan? I am unclear about the terminology and don't get a lot when I Google it. Is there an alternative name?
Imagine a modern day version made out of concrete and steel, complete with bulletproof glass.
Perfect information!
Thanks for watching!
Yes but can you build with it? How do you use it?
A lot of times it's not used for structural members or it's used in areas that are not as strict on building code. They would go into some sort of rebar or steel mesh grid and mortar or concrete would cover it. You can find all sorts of examples online when you search for it.
Large roof overhangs add beauty and protect doors, windows and siding from rain and sun damage.,
Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels. Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity. the future is electric. Wind and solar energy along with electric vehicles are the future. Stop using fossil fuels. There is a climate crisis.
I had a 30x40 slab poured and finished smooth 2 days ago. I plan on doing an epoxy coating eventually. I think expansion joints are ugly, and I'd rather not have to look at them. So I'm not doing them in mine. My new driveway has them, as well as a sidewalk around my house.. and they both cracked anyway. On the driveway it was next to the expansion joint! 🙄
I have a 24 x 30 garage with no control joints that is 25 years old. It developed one very small hairline crack that is barely noticeable.
The problem with the thick wall logic is, that windows will never have an R-value anywhere near a thick wall. Energy Star-rated windows typically hold an R-value of 3, which is almost nothing.
